Build The NEW Instant Boats
by Harold H. (Dynamite)
Payson
Following on the Instant Success of Instant Boats
(published in 1979), Dynamite Payson has written Build the
New Instant Boats, published in 1984. Dynamite has added to
his Instant Boat fleet so you can add to yours.
Supplementing the 6 designs in the first book is a whole new
genera. tion of 11 plywood boats with even more variety: 11
hassle-free new designs that you can build in a week's time
from precomputed plans. No lofting, no moulds, no building
jig&emdash;no sweat. For 3 of the 11 boats, Dynamite here
introduces a superb building technique: Tack and Tape. A
variation on the theme of stitch-and-glue or sewn-seam
construction, the Tack-and-Tape system uses polyester resin,
nails, and fiberglass tape to allow you to create craft with
lively sheers and shapely hulls. The technique is, above
all, very forgiving&emdash;a minor glitch here or there
miraculously vanishes under the camouflage of glue and tape.
So that you can easily follow his procedure, Dynamite shows
you how to build, by the Tack and Tape method, Gypsy, a
16-foot rowing and sailing craft, Nymph, a 7-foot 9-inch
"mind boggler"; and Diablo, an outboard-powered workboat.
The other 8 designs in the book's collection are: the
Lug-Rigged Windsprint; Tortoise, the Ugly Duckling; Skimmer,
the Poor Man's Whaler; the Dynamite Sailboard; a Workhorse
called June Bug; the Handy 10 1/2 foot Pointy Skiff; the
PedalDriven Sidewheeler; and the 23 1/2 foot Light
Schooner. In addition, there are appendixes on quartersawing
lumber, scarfing plywood, and learning to sail. Everyone
aspires to be a craftsman, but&emdash;to be
realistic&emdash;everyone isn't. This is where Instant Boats
come in, and where they help convert boatbuilding dreams to
reality. Ask anyone who has built one of the first
generation of Instant Boats. Their satisfaction is proof
that to build an Instant Boat interest is crucial&emdash;but
professional boatbuilding skill is not.
