Hi Doug,

As Wild Bill said, "Doug, I'm more sure than ever...that we are kin!" How true. If nothing else, it's as if we "Paysonites" got off the same UFO after leaving planet Bolger!

As for workboats... Yup, there's something so trustworthy about them - it's like they're an old friend, even at the first glance.

Concerning epoxy drips... Well... It goes without saying that craftsmanship is always the goal, and rightfully so... Sloppiness is never desirable, and can lead to the worst of all sins - a weakened boat. Still, if you build her to design and build her rugged, the world probably won't explode if she doesn't win a beauty contest.

You wrote, "It actually made me sad that more than one young man will drive past her in his pick up truck, day dreaming about the moment when he has his own bass boat on a trailer behind his truck, while that beautiful little skiff quietly rots away, marking the crabber's address for the postal workers." Yup, yup, yup. A couple years ago, the wife and I were landing our little 1957 16' aluminum Starcraft 9.9hp ($1,000). After we did so, a young man and his wife (probably in their late 20s or early 30s) with two kids were putting their sparkly new bass boat/monster engine on their new trailer which was attached to their tricked out F-250. We're probably talking a total of $60k+ easy... I don't know... Maybe that young fellow's uncle was rich, but dog-gone that was a lot of money for a young family. Anywho... If people don't like MM, fine. They can go home, break open their checkbooks and try to pay for their bank's shiny bass boat. Time will perform the calculus and figure out what's worthy of "'Would you look at that boat?'" My money is on MM. I guess it's all part of our cornucopia society... Why build sensibly when you can spend wildly and then throw the boat away and start over? But then again, the flashy bass boat guys are hunting a higher quality fish than you are...

I just saw the new pics...

Ya know Doug... If you aren't careful you might just turn out to be a boatbuilder after all.

Wow, excellent work.

Hi Alan,

My buddies from the U.K. on the Carp.com forum would 'politely' disagree that the bass boat boys are hunting a higher quality fish than me  I have been out twice fly casting to tailing carp in the M.M., one fish I was after was an honest 12" wide across the end of the tail!! ( 30-40+lb fish) .Haven't gotten there yet.

I know many people consider them Junk fish, but especially with lighter Fly casting gear, ultra light, or dare I say extreme ultra light telescoping tackle ( I am numbero quattro esta El Mondo for big fish with a particular brand of 'fishing pen' caught on video - WARNING!! THE VIDEO IS PROMOTIONAL FOR THE ROD SO I WON"T POST IT HERE) carp can't be beat for sheer fun in my book.

You can bet the Elsie will launch from Lebanon Landing and go upcreek after some tailing carp with the fly rod. 40 lb carp won't exactly equal the 'Nantucket Sleigh Ride' the whalers took after setting the Harpoon, but that Carp will take the dory where it wants to until it tires out :o

Hi Doug,

Sorry for the confusion... My point was that the guys in their fancy boats go after the same fish you do... They just do it at a "slightly" higher financial cost.

Like I said, my bet is on MM and now the Elsie. (BTW... I'll be amazed if anyone has a snide remark for the dory. Expect looks of envy, longing, and silence.)

Hi Alan,

I understand, the factory boat guys do commit a bit more income to their outgo when we both kick in our tournament fee on Saturday morn'. :D

I expect that once I have Elsie out and about the most common thing I will hear after 'nice boat' will be advice on how best to motorize her.

The Puget Sound boys over at UknowWhere tell me that the Washington State authorities, Coast Guard, and even Sherrif boats frequently respond when they are rowing out in the middle of the sound. Sailing is apparently seen as deviant behaviour yet still tolerated. Rowing however, is seen as some sort of emergency.....

It does seem as folks now a days overlook the possibility that paddling and/or rowing may actually be enjoyable activities, to say nothing of beneficial.

Gets back to your observations on our culture, or as some would insist, lack thereof.

Extra Funky! I'm in love!... I thought I read about this color scheme in a Gardner book but I can't find the passage, one friend suggested that I had dreamt of it, another opined a nightmare

Doug, I love it! I love it!

Kind of reminds me of a Mexican Bar in which I spent a lot of my misguided youth!

Ha! i'm just kidding...I have always liked the soft pastel colors of Centeral American homes & businesses.

I'm going to try for that effect when DB is finished.

Thanks Bill,

I spent some quality time on the belt sander with one of the Mk II L.T. oars yesterday. Also went to'n th' Lowes and spied this rope I thought would look good on Elsie. I recklessly spent about $1.29 USD on a short length so I could get a look-see.

I'll be getting about 15' or so of that diameter and color for a painter and about 2' of a thicker diameter of the same color for the stern 'loop' handle.

Also, I never thought about the colors I picked and the pastel hues of the southwest and our neighbors waaay down south. Your post inspired me to paint the DOUG-E-STEP and the DOUG-E-TABLE. They needed painting anywho :)

Well, since Doug hasn't posted a message for almost a week, I guess he took Alan's suggestion...and tried to sneak some boat work into the house!

Sigh! And he was such a nice guy.

Hi Bill, I have secured a 10' painter through the bowpipe and a two foot becket through the transom cleats. Mk I V.T. oars have nylon rope leathers and buttons ( sort of) The Mk II L.T. ( less tragic ) narrow blade oars are getting painted to match Elsie. Perchance some pics in a day or two. Tenative splash is 8/16....
